I wish I was at a store with lower volume and higher payroll.

Advice

A job in customer service should be mandatory for everyone. Get as much out of it as possible - there's a lot to learn.

What I liked

The experience of being able to assist guests outside of scanning and putting their items in bags. Being able to talk and have conversations with the guests.

What I wish was different

The organization of the company. Shifts where sometimes scheduled last minute and many people called out, which made work more stressful.

Advice

In this experience and in life generally, things will not always go your way. It is upsetting when it happens but you have to be able to learn, and adapt in the moment, whilst having patience for yourself despite the circumstances.

The employees that I worked with were really nice and the job itself isn't very complicated.

What I wish was different

The management. They were unorganized and loaded to much work on a single person, with a big store there wasn't enough time or energy to accomplish everything.

Advice

Don't let them try to make you always be there or always do everything, you have a right as an individual to say something is simply too much.

What I liked

I liked being able to help customers and make friends at work. I also thought the job itself was easy to learn and it kept me pretty busy.

What I wish was different

I wish that some of my coworkers would have been more cooperative. Sometimes it felt like I was always picking up the slack from other areas of the store.

Advice

Try to always have a good attitude and don't let negative customers or coworkers affect you. Just do your best and be nice to everyone.

Store Executive Intern

What I liked

I like the level of challenge this internship provided. While the first few weeks were spent doing hands on learning and training, you eventually are able to put all of that knowledge to use. You are given shifts where you are the leader and you spend time around the store making decisions from a managers perspective. I also like the level of thoroughness. You spend time in each area of the store so you are familiar with the daily processes and work expectations from people in that area.

What I wish was different

There's not much that I can say I wish had been different about this internship. From the recruiting process to the actual internship, to even after the internship, I only have positive thoughts about the experience.

Advice

Be curious! Always be open to constantly learning new things because this is a fast paced internship. You spend time in every area of the store so it is a lot of knowledge. Don't be afraid to take a step back and present any questions you may have so you don't get caught up. Really assert yourself as a leader. You essentially are on the same level as the managers so make sure you have that presence with the employees and the guests. Make sure to build relationships with the employees but keep it professional. A lot of the employees will be in your age range so don't get too comfortable but make sure you have enough of the relationship for them to approach you with feedback, and you do the same to them.

Executive Intern

What I liked

The internship program with Target is highly immersive and very focused on developing one's leadership skills. I loved that there were days where we (as interns) got to meet and develop with each other and senior level management at the financial headquarters, and I'm also really happy that I can now say I have managed over 80 people at a given time and developed sales strategies for a multi million dollar business (any given Target store).

What I wish was different

The program was rotational in that you rotate through the four main sectors of Target Management: HR, Logistics, Sales, and Asset Protection. This was somewhat stressful because expectations were fairly high for knowledge retention and you only had half of the program (about 5 weeks) to learn and retain enough about each sector to manage it on your own. Due to this, I wish the program was set up as a 2 week overview of what each sector of Target is all about, and then spend the remaining 8 weeks really focused on just 1 or 2 sectors (i.e. HR and Sales, or Logistics and AP, etc.)

Advice

I think the most valuable piece of advice I could give to future Target Interns is just to proceed with confidence. Despite the fast paced environment and necessary steep learning curve, the management and your mentors make a great effort to aid you in every way, so even if you don't know the answer to something, or you feel intimidated by the scale of business or number of people you will oversee, just dive right in and try. This internship is truly an excellent learning experience, and is applicable to so many positions that you may apply for after the program ends, within and outside of Target.

What I liked

Everyday was different. I got a lot of responsibility as an intern and was able to learn the ins and outs of a Target store. My voice as an intern was valuable and I was able to help make positive changes in the store.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more interactions with other interns. I was the only intern and only got to interact with other interns a few times.

Advice

My advice would be to stay calm when you start the internship. There is a lot to learn but you will get the hang of everything by the end of the summer!

Executive Team Leader Intern

What I liked

You get access to many different departments and functions within the retail store and genuinely come to know so many aspects very intimately. The team members are very nice and once you are in the groove of things you will discover all of the benefits of a healthy relationship with your team.

What I wish was different

It's very political. You have to tread carefully because there are big egos in retail-- it's a chance to lead a team, projects, etc. and feel very important, so many individuals are hard to deal with. Ultimately, you are a dime a dozen, and your progress is not very important to them because your failure will not be a setback for the store or district. You are not important to them at all.

Advice

Make your money, get some leadership experience, then get out and never return.

What I liked

Target's Marketing Development Program focuses on mentorship. It is designed to develop the professional and personal intelligence of a person. Every intern receives a real-life project that was worked on by a full-time Target member, but not finished. They also focused on giving you a great experience in Minneapolis. The company is an open culture so I met with Directors, VP's and the CMO for different reasons. The program also partners you with a manager and mentor.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have learned about this opportunity through my school. However, I learned through a Career Prep Program called Management Leaders Of Tomorrow or MLT.

Advice

You have the return offer once you walk into your internship. It is a 10-12 week interview that means that you are being evaluated every day for every action. So don't lose the return offer by not performing or slacking off in those 12 weeks.

Software Engineer Intern

What I liked

It is a very outgoing place to work, and the expectations are very fair. They have subsidized housing so its cheap, and the complex they put you in gives you your own bedroom and bathroom in a 4 bedroom apartment. The pay is very competitive too, and they treat their interns like royalty. The interview was non-technical and more discussion oriented, as they are more interested in your ability to discuss your coursework than reproduce a solution from memory.

What I wish was different

Hardly anything, I have already accepted a full time offer there!
