What I liked

The store itself, along with the products they sold, and the people who worked there.

What I wish was different

Some of the methods of leadership, along with how they handle sales and extended warranties.

Advice

The customers come first, don't worry about finishing your daily duties until the store dies down.

Executive Team Leader Intern

June - August 2018 • West Valley City, UT

What I liked

I really liked that it was hands on. It isn't a job where you just sit at a desk and I like that because I like to be moving around. I was also in charge of a team of workers at the store and it is great to know that my fellow Executive coworkers allowed me to take charge even if I did make a "mistake" or not the "best decision" while being on duty, my coworkers helped me with analyzing the different options and outcomes that could have happened. It really gave me the opportunity to be more confident with my leadership skills.

What I wish was different

I wish that for a couple weeks I would have had the opportunity to work 4 days of 10 hours because in reality, the executive position is for 5 days of 10 hours. So even though I was hourly and they spread it out for me to work 5 days of 8 hours, I think it is important to know and understand exactly the amount of hours and how long of days that one will be working.

Advice

I would say go for this internship. It was super helpful and I felt I grew a lot within myself because I got a chance to really see how I am as a leader with no outline of how to be a "good leader." The Target team is honestly great and everyone is helping you grow. Even if there is something you could work on, it is an opportunity for you not a flaw. I like the attitude and feel of the company and what is provides.

What I liked

My coworkers and bosses were for the most part very nice and helped make this not-the-most-interesting job a little bit more fun. I also genuinely enjoy running Ship From Store, collecting & boxing items guests have ordered online to be shipped to their houses.

What I wish was different

Nothing huge; of course, I’d rather stay at home and hang out with my family than work, and there was no shortage of days that were stressful, boring, or both, but that’s the way jobs are, and there’s not much anyone can do about that.

Advice

Just stay optimistic. If I knew my shift was going to be unpleasant for whatever reason, I went in humming an upbeat song (no joke) and kept it stuck in my head through the whole shift.

Cashier

May - July 2018 • San Ramon, CA

What I liked

Not much. It was good to get paid 12.00 an hour and they were good about giving me the amount of hours I initialy requested (if I reminded them).

What I wish was different

I wish that employees were shuffled around different positions throughout the day so we weren't stuck standing in one place for up to eight hour shifts. I also just wish I didn't work there altogether. It was not my favorite experience.

Advice

Definitely dont take this job if you are an introvert. Being an introvert myself, I was absolutely worn out by the end of my shifts from having constant small talk.

Backroom

June - August 2018 • Valparaiso, IN

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience of working in a corporate environment and making good use of my freshman summer break.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked harder to find an internship that is more pertinent to my majors.

Advice

This was a wonderful place to work with very friendly people and gives the opportunity to work in a group and take on responsibility for your own work, especially when closing up the backroom area of the store.

What I liked

The work was interesting. Shadowing different facets of the business was effective and fast paced.

What I wish was different

The structure was sort of loosely constructed. Day to day was not laid out and projects were self created.

Advice

Get ready for retail hour schedules!

I had great coworkers and all my bosses were extremely considerate and worked well with us. I was also scheduled 40 hours a week which was great for making money.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to have less closing shifts as I would have them a few times a week and not get home until 1 am.
